Building a Legacy: Don Hoyt’s 26-Year Journey at Wausau Supply

In an era where job-hopping has become the norm, Don Hoyt stands out as a shining example of loyalty, leadership, and pride in one’s work. Since November 2, 1998, Don has been a cornerstone of Wausau Supply’s Eau Claire facility, dedicating over 26 years to the company and helping shape it into what it is today.

A Career Forged in Commitment

Don began his journey when the company operated out of a single warehouse, loading trucks outdoors year-round without the convenience of a loading bay. Over the years, he witnessed—and contributed to—tremendous growth. Today, as the Day Shift Supervisor, Don leads his team with a hands-on approach, serving as the right-hand man to his manager and continuously expanding his knowledge of the company’s systems and operations.

“I’ve got a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in this place,” Don says. “We’ve built something special here, and I’m proud of it.”

A Front-Row Seat to Transformation

Don has seen Wausau Supply evolve from a general supplier of everyday building materials to a specialized distributor of high-end products like LP siding and Diamond Kote finishes. He recalls the transition from narrow aisle racking to open aisles for forklifts, and the shift in product focus as the company adapted to market demands.

“It’s pretty unreal what I’ve seen over the years,” he reflects. “We’ve come a long way.”

The Power of Ownership: ESOP in Action

One of the aspects Don is most passionate about is the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). With decades of contributions under his belt, Don has seen firsthand how the ESOP can build a secure future for employees.

“I talk it up big to new hires,” he says. “The better we do, the more we all benefit. It’s not just a job—it’s a career that can lead to a comfortable retirement.”

Don emphasizes that pride in one’s work—whether it’s the quality of the product, the way trucks are loaded, or how drivers interact with customers—directly impacts the company’s success and, in turn, the ESOP.

A Message to the Next Generation

As younger generations increasingly seek new opportunities, Don offers a compelling case for staying the course.

“We’re very safety-conscious and family-oriented here,” he explains. “Everyone I work with is like a brother or sister. Once you get to know the team and the systems, it’s not overwhelming. And there’s always someone to back you up.”

His advice to new employees is simple but powerful: “Stick it out. Ask questions. Be proud of what you do. This place can be your future.”

A Legacy of Dedication

Don Hoyt’s story is more than just a career timeline—it’s a testament to the value of commitment, teamwork, and pride in craftsmanship. His journey at Wausau Supply is a reminder that when you invest in your work and your workplace, the rewards go far beyond a paycheck.
