Coming Full Circle: Don Boomsma's Return to Wausau Supply

Don Boomsma’s career began in 2002, fresh out of college, with Wausau Supply’s Engineered Wood Division. Calling on lumber yards across southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, Don quickly learned the ropes of the building materials industry, an environment familiar to him, as both of his parents had worked in lumber yards.

But when the housing crisis hit in 2006, Don saw the writing on the wall. With thousands of spec homes sitting unsold and inventory piling up, he pivoted to finance and banking, eventually launching a business with his wife, an attorney. As their business grew, Don took on a new role, managing operations and raising their four children.

Years later, with the kids in school and the business thriving, Don felt the pull to return to full-time work. Wausau Supply was at the top of his list.

“I missed the people, the culture, and the quality of the products,” Don shared. “Wausau always did the little things right. I remember Joe Jordan inspecting siding with a jeweler’s loupe, checking coating penetration and color accuracy. That level of detail stuck with me.”

After reconnecting with longtime friend Mitch Goerg and visiting the Lakeville warehouse, Don found himself back where it all began, this time in an outside sales role with Waudena.

What sets Wausau Supply apart, Don says, is the combination of product excellence and team culture. “The doors are customizable, easy to adjust, and built to reduce callbacks. I’ve met the people who make them. I’ve seen the craftsmanship firsthand.”

Training and support have also been key to Don’s success. From structured sales training to immersive visits to the door shop, Don has been equipped with the tools and knowledge to thrive. Weekly team meetings foster collaboration, and colleagues like Steve Thielman have gone above and beyond to share insights and offer guidance.

“Out of all the places I’ve worked, I’ve never seen a team structure as strong as this one,” Don said. “Everyone’s eager to help, and the ESOP culture really shines through. It’s good to be back.”
